Articles #1, 3, 7, 8 and 17 through 26 were written by Klaus Wust; the remaining consist of source material selected and edited by Wust. The articles appeared in the Washington Journal, a German-language weekly published in Washiongton D.C., and were reprinted during the same weeks by the Baltimore Correspondent, another German-language weekly.

John Brown (Johannes Braun), 1771-1850, was one of the best educated clergymen of his time in western Virginia.
